The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — Delhi wakes up loud. Our driver met us right at the hotel in Noida, and before I’d finished my coffee we were weaving through traffic, past cycles stacked with flowers and school kids waving at us. At Qutub Minar, our guide pointed out faded carvings on sandstone that felt cool under my hand. The Lotus Temple was quieter than I expected; even the air seemed softer there. Lunch was whatever our guide recommended (I still don’t know what half of it was), but it was spicy enough that I needed two bottles of water. Chandni Chowk hit me like a wall — spices everywhere, people shouting prices, a smell of cardamom so strong it stuck to my shirt for hours. Li laughed when I tried to pronounce ‘Khari Baoli’ — probably butchered it.

By the time we reached Agra it was dark and sticky-warm. The next morning started early — too early maybe — but seeing the Taj Mahal appear out of mist at sunrise made me forget about sleep. The marble felt cold on my bare feet, and our guide told stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz that made the place feel less like a postcard and more like a love letter someone left behind. There’s something strange about seeing so many people quietly staring at the same thing. After breakfast back at the hotel (sweet chai, eggs), we saw Agra Fort — red stone glowing in the sun — then drove towards Jaipur with music playing low in the car. Not sure if I dozed off or just stared out at fields for an hour.

Jaipur’s pink walls surprised me — they really are everywhere. Our guide here had this habit of waving his hands in big circles when he talked about history; he made Jaigarh Fort sound like something out of an old movie. I tried to count all the little windows in Hawa Mahal but lost track after twenty-something. The City Palace museum had these old weapons and costumes that looked heavy enough to knock you over if you wore them for five minutes. Jal Mahal just floats there on the lake; we stood by the water for a while not saying much because it felt right not to fill every silence. By late afternoon, driving back towards Delhi (or you can end in Jaipur if you want), I realized how much had happened in three days — still not sure how they fit so much in without ever making us feel rushed.
