The experience

The tour starts in Delhi with a private guide walking you through Old Delhi's markets and monuments: the Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk's spice and jewelry stalls, the Red Fort, and Qutub Minar. You'll ride a cycle rickshaw through the narrow lanes where silversmiths and sweet shops still operate as they have for centuries. The same day moves into New Delhi to see India Gate, Parliament House, the Presidential Palace, and the Lotus Temple before a private car takes you to Agra for the night.

Day two starts before dawn. You watch the sunrise at the Taj Mahal, then spend about two hours inside with your guide learning how Shah Jahan built it in memory of his wife Mumtaz. After breakfast back at the hotel, you visit Agra Fort, another UNESCO site where Mughal emperors once lived. In the afternoon, you drive to Ranthambore and stop at an elephant rescue center: a strictly observation-only visit where trained caretakers explain how the rescued elephants are rehabilitated and cared for, with no riding, bathing, or physical contact.

The tiger safari happens early on day three. You spend two to three hours in a shared jeep or canter moving through Ranthambore National Park's dense forest with a government-appointed guide, watching for wild Bengal tigers, bears, sloths, and birds. The park surrounds a 10th-century fort and became a Project Tiger reserve in 1973. After the safari and breakfast, you drive to Jaipur. On the final day, a guided tour takes you through Jaipur's landmarks: the five-story Hawa Mahal in red and pink sandstone, the City Palace (still home to the royal family), Jantar Mantar's 19 astronomical instruments built in 1734, Jal Mahal floating on Man Sagar Lake, and Amber Fort with its ornate palaces and courtyards. Lunch is included. You return to Delhi by around 9 p.m., or you can arrange to stay in Jaipur instead.
