The experience

The tour begins with hotel or airport pickup in Delhi. Your private guide takes you to Qutub Minar, a 12th-century minaret built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak and now a UNESCO site, then to the Lotus Temple with its striking flower-shaped architecture. You'll pass the Red Fort, see India Gate, and walk through Humayun's Tomb, the first garden tomb in India. The day ends in Old Delhi at Chandni Chowk, the vibrant market where you ride a tuk-tuk through the narrow lanes past spice stalls and silver shops, then visit Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, and Khari Baoli, Asia's largest wholesale spice market. After sightseeing, your driver takes you to Agra for the night.

Day two starts before sunrise. You're driven to the Taj Mahal and given a battery van ride from the parking area to the gate: a small detail that saves the walk and gets you inside as the marble whitens in the early light. Your guide explains why Emperor Shah Jahan built it in 1630 for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Afterward, you visit Agra Fort, a 17th-century UNESCO site with courtyards and pavilions, then the Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah, often called the Baby Taj because it was the first Mughal monument built entirely from white marble. In the afternoon, you drive to Jaipur.

The final day covers Jaipur's landmarks. Jaigarh Fort sits on the Aravalli hills and houses the Jaivana Cannon, the world's largest wheeled cannon. The Hawa Mahal, a five-story palace with 953 small latticed windows, was built in 1799 so royal women could watch street festivals unseen. You'll see the City Palace, Jal Mahal (a 17th-century palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake), and Jantar Mantar, an ancient stone observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II to measure time and track celestial bodies. At the end, you're driven back to Delhi or dropped at Jaipur Airport, depending on your plans.
