The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell — cardamom and frying dough twisting through Chandni Chowk as we rattled along in a rickshaw. Our guide (Amit, always smiling) pointed out a tiny stall selling jalebi. I tried one, sticky and hot, and nearly burned my tongue but didn’t care. Jama Masjid’s steps were crowded with kids playing cricket; their laughter echoed off the old stone. I kept thinking: this is what Delhi feels like when you’re not just passing through.

We left for Agra in the afternoon — honestly, I dozed off in the car (the AC was a blessing). Woke up just as we crossed the Yamuna and saw Mehtab Bagh’s gardens lined up perfectly with the Taj Mahal across the river. The next morning was all soft mist and pale marble at sunrise. I’d seen a thousand photos of the Taj Mahal but standing there early, with birds cutting across that pale sky… it felt quieter than I expected. Our guide told us Shah Jahan built it for love; I tried to imagine that kind of devotion.

On the road to Jaipur we stopped at Fatehpur Sikri — red sandstone glowing under our feet — and later Abhaneri’s stepwell, which looked like an Escher drawing come to life. Jaipur itself was chaos and color: cows weaving between tuk-tuks, women in saris brighter than anything back home. At Hawa Mahal I tried to count all those windows (gave up after twenty). Lunch was dal baati churma in some little spot Amit knew; he laughed when I struggled with the baati — so dry! But good with ghee.

I think about those days sometimes when city noise gets too much here. Something about watching sunrise over marble or hearing temple bells in Jaipur sticks with you longer than you’d expect.
