The Experience

The first thing I remember is the dust — that reddish haze kicking up behind our 4x4 ATVs as we left the ranch outside Punta Cana. Our guide, Miguel, had this way of making even the safety talk kind of funny (“don’t drive like my cousin!”). Once we got going, it was all palms and flashes of sunlight through the trees, the engines humming under us. I kept getting whiffs of something sweet and earthy — maybe from the cocoa trees? Or just the thick air after last night’s rain. Either way, it felt like we were miles from any resort.

We stopped at a family-run farm where they handed us tiny cups of Dominican coffee — strong enough to make you blink twice — and broke off pieces of homemade chocolate for us to try. There was Mamajuana too (that spiced rum locals swear by), but honestly, I’m not sure I did it justice. Miguel laughed when I tried to pronounce it right; pretty sure I failed. The farm dogs wandered around our feet while someone explained how they press coconut oil by hand. It felt…quietly real, like being let in on a secret.

Later, bouncing along muddy tracks, we reached Taíno Ecological Park. The water in the cenote was so clear you could see every ripple from above — cold enough to jolt you awake if you jumped in (which I did, after some hesitation). My shirt stuck to my back from the heat but that swim made everything slow down for a minute. Then came Macao Beach: wild waves, limestone cliffs, kids selling bracelets under blue tarps. We had time to just sit there and watch surfers wipe out or wander along the sand with wet hair dripping saltwater into our eyes.

I didn’t expect to feel so far away from the usual Punta Cana crowds or to care about how coffee tastes straight off a local farm. If you’re thinking about an ATV tour in Punta Cana — especially one that stops at Macao Beach and lets you try all those flavors — well, I still think about that view from the dunes sometimes.
