The experience

After pickup from your hotel, a 30-minute drive takes you to the ATV ranch where a guide runs through safety and handling in about 15 minutes. Then you're in the driver's seat. The route follows rugged forest trails and tropical gardens in a rally-style caravan. You control the pace and the buggy, not a guide steering you through stops. The first major stop lands at an organic farm where you spend 20 minutes tasting and learning about Dominican products: coffee, green tea, chocolate, mamajuana and cigars. The farm sits on working land, not a tourist stage, so the tastings come with context instead of ceremony.

From there, the ride continues through more forest and trails to a cave 25 feet deep with an underground river running through it. The water is swimmable if you want to jump in. If you don't, you can walk the cave floor and watch others do it. The cave stop runs about 20 minutes before you ride back to the buggies and head toward the coast. Macao Beach comes last: a stretch of sand backed by limestone cliffs where you can wade or sit before the final 25-minute drive back to the ranch and the 30-minute return to your hotel.
