The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect when we pulled up to the ranch outside Punta Cana—just this low hum of engines and the smell of wet earth after rain. The helmets felt a bit awkward at first (my hair never survives these things), but our guide, Miguel, was all patience and big grins. He showed us the difference between the buggies and ATVs, let us pick what felt right. I went for the ATV—maybe just to feel like I had some control over all that mud. Before we even started, he handed out tiny cups of thick Dominican coffee. I burned my tongue but honestly, it was worth it.

The ride itself was chaos in the best way. Mud splattered everywhere—my shoes are probably ruined—and we zipped past fields where kids waved at us from doorways. There was this brief stop at a little house where they make cacao and mamajuana. The air smelled like sweet smoke and chocolate; I tried to say “gracias” with my mouth full of sticky cacao paste. Miguel laughed and told me I’d need more practice if I wanted to pass for local. We didn’t linger long but there was something about that stop—the quiet pride in how they explained everything.

After that came the cave. It’s darker than you think inside, cool and echoey, with water so clear it almost looks fake until you touch it. Some people hesitated before jumping in—I did too—but once you’re under, you forget about everything else for a second except how cold it is and how your voice bounces off the rock walls when you laugh. Then back on the trail again, still dripping wet under the helmet.

Macao Beach was last—the sand is pale gold and there’s always someone selling coconuts nearby. We just sat there for a while with our feet buried in warm sand, not really talking much because sometimes you don’t need to. Looking back now, I can still hear that engine noise mixed with ocean waves—it’s weird what sticks with you after a day like that.

What’s included

Your day includes shared hotel pickup and drop-off around Bávaro–Punta Cana, use of either an ATV or buggy (your choice), helmets for safety plus lockers for your things, guided stops with tastings of Dominican coffee, cacao and mamajuana along the route—and time to swim in a natural cave before relaxing on Macao Beach.
