Buggy tour Punta Cana: drive to Macao Beach and water cave
You drive the buggy, not a guide—four hours steering through caves, beaches and tropical forest.
A buggy tour in Punta Cana where you drive your own vehicle to three stops: an organic farm for tastings of Dominican coffee, cacao and mamajuana; a 25-foot water cave where swimmers can jump in; and Macao Beach, ringed by limestone cliffs. Hotel pickup and a guide in English, Spanish or French are included. The tour runs four hours total.
Step-by-step itinerary
Buggy tour to cave and beach
- Drive buggy through tropical trails
- Stop at organic farm tasting local products
- Drive to underground water cave
- Swim or admire cave beauty
- Drive to Macao Beach
- Relax on Macao Beach
- Return buggy to ranch
- Transport back to hotel
The Experience
You get picked up at your hotel and driven to the ranch where your buggy waits. From there, you're behind the wheel for the whole route—steering through steep forest trails and tropical gardens for about 25 minutes before the first stop at an organic farm. There you spend 20 minutes tasting and learning about Dominican staples: coffee, green tea, chocolate, mamajuana and cigars. Then it's another 25 minutes of driving to the water cave.
The cave sits 25 feet underground with a river running through it. You can jump in if you want to swim, or stay dry and walk around the limestone chamber. After 20 minutes there, you drive another 25 minutes to Macao Beach, where the sand meets tall stone cliffs. You have time to sit, swim or just watch the waves before loading the buggy for the final 25-minute drive back to the ranch. From there, your driver takes you back to your hotel.
The tour works with a choice of vehicles at checkout: a two-person buggy, a single-rider ATV, or a shared buggy option. Children from age 3 can ride along. The guide travels with you and speaks English, Spanish or French. Bring water and sun protection—you're exposed while driving, and the cave and beach have no shade.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want to drive yourself instead of sitting as a passenger—the buggy puts you in control of the pace and the route, which is what makes the forest trails and cave feel like an adventure rather than a sightseeing stop. Choose the two-person buggy if you're traveling with a partner or friend; pick the single-rider ATV if you want the whole experience to yourself.

Can I really drive the buggy myself, or does the guide take over?
You drive the buggy the whole time. The guide follows in a separate vehicle and meets you at each stop to explain what you're seeing and manage the tastings and timing.
What happens at the water cave—do I have to jump in?
The cave is 25 feet deep with a river inside. Jumping in is optional; you can wade, swim or just walk around and look. The guide will be there either way.
Is Macao Beach crowded, or is it a quiet spot?
Macao Beach is a real public beach on the northeast coast of Punta Cana, known for strong waves and fewer crowds than the resort beaches. It's lined with limestone cliffs and open ocean on both sides.
What's included in the tour price, and what do I need to pay for separately?
Hotel pickup, the buggy rental, the guide, farm tastings, and entry to the cave and beach are all included. Food and drinks beyond the tastings are not included, so bring cash or a card if you want to buy anything.
How long is the actual driving time, and how much of the tour is stops?
The tour is four hours total. You drive for about 95 minutes spread across three legs (25 + 25 + 25 minutes), and spend about 60 minutes at the three stops (20 + 20 + 20 minutes), plus 30 minutes of return transport to your hotel.
Is this tour safe for someone who's never driven a buggy before?
The trails are steep and uneven, so some driving experience helps. The guide will brief you before you start. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and pregnant travelers should skip it.
