The experience

You drive your own buggy through the backcountry east of Punta Cana, starting in the village of La Seiba del Salao. A guide leads the route and stops first at a typical house where you taste fresh coffee, cocoa, chocolate and local liqueur: a break that frames what the region grows and how people live outside the resort zone.

The Macao Cave is a cenote roughly 30 minutes from Bávaro, carved by underground springs that the Taíno people relied on centuries ago. The cave opens into a freshwater lagoon about the size of an Olympic pool, with water so clear you can see the bottom at depths under 26 feet. Stalactites and stalagmites line the 50-meter passage. You swim in both the cold spring water inside the cave and the warm water that flows out: two temperatures in one stop, a physical shift the source itself creates.

Macao Beach closes the loop: white sand, coconut palms, and the Atlantic in turquoise. You swim for 15 to 30 minutes, take photos, and the tour ends. The whole outing runs about three and a half hours. You wear a crash helmet throughout. The vehicle is air-conditioned between stops.
