Summary

ATV buggy ride to Macao Beach with cave swim and local flavors

You’ll kick up mud on an ATV buggy ride from Punta Cana to Macao Beach, stopping for a cold-water cave swim and tastings of Dominican coffee, chocolate, and mamajuana at a countryside home. Expect laughter with your guide, earthy smells from cacao farms, and plenty of sun-soaked moments to remember long after you shake the sand from your shoes.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We jerked forward as the ATVs rumbled out of Punta Cana — dust in my teeth already, but I didn’t care. Our guide, José, shouted something over the engines that I only half caught (my Spanish is still embarrassing), but he grinned and pointed at the trail ahead. The air smelled like wet earth and exhaust, sharp and weirdly sweet. I remember gripping the handlebars tighter as we hit the first muddy patch. There was this kid waving at us from a cacao field — his hands were stained brown, and he flashed a peace sign like he’d done it a thousand times before.

We stopped at a small house where José’s aunt makes coffee and chocolate. She handed us tiny cups — thick, almost gritty coffee that tasted smoky and strong. Someone tried mamajuana for the first time (not me — I chickened out) and coughed so hard even José laughed. The tobacco drying on strings smelled spicy-sweet in the heat. It felt like we were intruding a bit, but they just kept smiling and offering more.

The cave was colder than I expected — you step down into this blue water cenote and suddenly everything goes quiet except for splashing echoes. My skin prickled when I jumped in; it was a shock after all that sun. Some people just dipped their toes, but honestly? That swim sticks with me more than any beach photo.

Macao Beach came last — wide sand, loud waves, vendors calling out in Spanish about empanadas and bracelets. We had maybe an hour there; it went too fast. I sat on my towel watching kids chase each other through the foam while my shoes filled with sand again (should’ve just gone barefoot). On the drive back, everyone was quieter — tired in that good way you get after doing something totally new.
