You ride buggies through Dominican farmland, stop at a working ranch to taste coffee and chocolate, swim in a natural cave well, and finish at Macao Beach for a final ocean swim. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with a driver-guide. Bring clothes you're willing to get muddy, and plan for moderate physical activity over about four hours.
"Don't forget to bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty," the guide said as we pulled up to the ranch, and that's when I knew this wasn't going to be a resort-lounge kind of day. The buggy tour from Punta Cana starts at a working ranch in Macao, where the Eastern Cordillera sits in the distance and the land stretches flat under palm and tobacco. We spent maybe thirty minutes there tasting Dominican coffee and chocolate, learning how cacao gets processed, and trying Mamajuana — this herbal drink locals swear by. The owner's hands moved fast, explaining each product like he'd done it a thousand times, which he probably had.
Then we got back on the buggies and headed into the rocky terrain. The ride itself is rough — you're bouncing over dirt trails, dust flying, and the guide pointing out the farmland rolling past. After maybe an hour of that, we stopped at a cave that opens into a natural well. The water inside is cold and clear, and you can actually swim in it. That part caught me off guard — you're in this underground space, limestone walls around you, and suddenly you're cooling off in water that's been there for who knows how long. It's the kind of moment that makes the mud on your clothes seem worth it.
The longest stretch of the buggy tour takes you from the cave back out to Macao Beach, which is where the landscape shifts completely. White sand, clear water, surfers in the distance. You get time to swim here too, rinse off some of the cave water and dust, and just sit for a bit. The whole thing runs about four hours from hotel pickup to drop-off, and by the end you've crossed three completely different environments — farmland, underground, and ocean. It's the kind of half-day that doesn't feel rushed, even though you're moving the whole time.
Your half-day includes hotel pickup and drop-off, buggy rental with a driver-guide, tastings of handmade Dominican coffee and chocolate at a working ranch, swimming in the Taino cave's natural well, and swimming time at Macao Beach. Bring swimwear and clothes you're willing to get muddy.
