An ATV riding activity in Punta Cana where you operate your own vehicle through tropical forest and farmland, stopping to taste Dominican chocolate and coffee at an organic farm, visit an underground spring-fed cave, and finish at Macao Beach. You choose between riding solo or sharing an ATV with a partner. Hotel pickup and a guide in your language are included. The ride takes about four hours and requires you to be at least 18 to drive, or 8 to ride as a passenger with an adult.

The experience

You get picked up at your hotel and driven to the ranch, where a guide runs through the safety briefing before you climb onto your ATV. From there, the day is yours to control. You navigate the difficult paths yourself, steering through dense forest and tropical gardens toward an organic farm where the guide stops to explain how coconut oil, tobacco and rum are grown. You taste fresh Dominican coffee and homemade chocolate here, and the richness of both hits different when you've just cut the engine after riding through the heat. The farm sits among typical Dominican houses, palm trees and banana plantations, so the landscape itself is part of what you're moving through.

The next stop is Taino Ecological Park, where you leave the ATV and walk into one of the Dominican Republic's best natural springs: a cenote, an underground cave filled with fresh water. You get roughly twenty minutes to swim and cool off. After that, you ride to Macao Beach, where the limestone cliffs and white sand give you a view most tourists miss from the resort. Twenty minutes there is enough to walk the shore or catch your breath before the drive back to the ranch and your hotel. The whole day runs about four hours from pickup to drop-off.

You can ride your own ATV if you're 18 or older, or share one with a partner on the same machine. Either way, a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or several other languages leads the group and handles the stops. You'll need closed-toe shoes or water shoes for safety on the ATV and in the cave. Towels, sunscreen, bandanas and water shoes are available to add at checkout if you want them.

The Taino Ecological Park cenote is an underground spring fed by fresh water. You swim inside the cave itself, surrounded by rock walls. You get about twenty minutes there before moving on to the beach.

Do I need to know how to ride an ATV before I book?

No. The guide covers safety instructions at the ranch before you start, and the paths are difficult but not technical. You need to be comfortable steering and controlling speed on uneven ground.

What happens if I'm staying in Cap Cana instead of Punta Cana proper?

Cap Cana pickups are subject to a USD 50 surcharge due to distance, and your reservation may shift to a different date or time depending on availability.

Is the chocolate and coffee tasting the main event, or just a stop?

It's a stop at an organic farm where you learn how the crops grow and taste the products fresh: about thirty minutes total. The riding and the cave are the main events. The tasting is what breaks up the afternoon.

How much time do I actually spend at Macao Beach?

Roughly twenty minutes. It's enough to walk the sand and take in the ocean view or jump in for a quick swim, but not a long beach day: the ride and the cave take up most of the four hours.
