The Experience
I didn’t expect to laugh so much before noon. The day started with us bouncing along dusty roads outside Punta Cana, helmets a bit crooked, engines coughing awake. Our guide Luis grinned as he handed out the keys — “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the bumps!” I could smell wet earth and something sweet, maybe sugarcane from a field nearby. The buggy felt rough under my hands but honestly, that was half the fun.
Macao Beach showed up all at once — this wide sweep of pale sand and turquoise water that looked almost fake. There were locals selling coconuts, kids darting in and out of the waves. We had about ten minutes here (I wish it was more), just enough for a salty dip and some photos with sand stuck between my toes. Luis pointed out where UNESCO had named it one of the Caribbean’s best beaches. Didn’t need convincing — I still think about that view sometimes when I’m back home.
After that we rattled over to Taino Cave. You have to duck your head going in; it smells cool and mineral-y inside, like wet stone after rain. Some people jumped straight into the underground river (maybe three meters down — looked farther when you’re standing there). I hesitated but went for it anyway — cold shock, then quiet except for our voices echoing off the walls. It’s only about fifteen minutes but time does something weird underground.
The last stop was a small house where they make coffee, cocoa, tobacco, and this stuff called Mama Juana (Dominican herbal rum). We tasted everything — I tried to pronounce “chocolate” in Spanish and got teased by Rosa, who runs the place. The coffee was strong enough to wake up your bones. If you like seeing how things are made or just want an excuse to eat chocolate before lunch, don’t skip this part.
What’s included
Your day includes roundtrip hotel transportation in Punta Cana, use of a crash helmet for safety on your buggy ride, plus tastings of fresh Dominican coffee, chocolate, tobacco products and Mama Juana liqueur at a local family house before heading back home muddy but happy.
