The experience

The boat leaves Ao Nang around 9am and heads straight for the Phi Phi Islands. You'll stop at Pileh Bay first: a lagoon ringed by limestone cliffs where the water sits so still you can see the bottom from the boat. The crew anchors for 45 to 60 minutes so you can swim and take photos before moving on. From there the guide takes the group to the first snorkeling site around Phi Phi Leh, where you'll spend another 45 to 60 minutes in the water with the mask and snorkel gear provided. The exact spot depends on weather and sea conditions that day, so the guide picks the safest reef with the most fish.

After snorkeling you'll head to Monkey Beach on Phi Phi Don, where the monkeys hang around the shoreline. The crew gives you 45 to 60 minutes to walk the beach and watch them (the warning is real: they're wild, so keep your distance and don't feed them). Lunch happens at a restaurant on Phi Phi Don, a Halal buffet with a vegetarian option, plus fruits, soft drinks and snacks on the boat throughout the day. You'll get a second snorkeling session around Phi Phi Don before the return trip to Ao Nang, so you're in the water twice in different spots.

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off from your accommodation in Ao Nang, bottled water, travel insurance, and an English-speaking guide who runs the whole day. Bring sunscreen, a beach towel, sunglasses and pocket money if you want to buy anything at Phi Phi Don. The boat is a speed boat, so the ride is fast and the whole day runs about 7 to 8 hours from pickup to return. Note that Maya Bay is closed from August through October for environmental rehabilitation. During those months the operator takes the group to another island instead for photos and snorkeling.
