The experience

The boat leaves Krabi in the morning and heads straight for the Phi Phi Islands, stopping first at Viking Cave on the eastern cliffs of Phi Phi Leh. You don't land here (the cave sits high on the rock face), but the boat slows so you can see the traditional birdnest collectors at work from the water. From there the route moves to the Phi Phi Leh lagoon, a sheltered pool ringed by limestone, and then to Maya Bay itself: the crescent beach famous from the film "The Beach," with turquoise water and soft sand backed by towering cliffs. This is where the main snorkeling happens, with equipment provided and a guide in the water to point out the reef life.

After Maya Bay, you move to Loh Sama Bay on the southern tip of Phi Phi Leh, another snorkel site with a small islet and a canyon beach. The boat then crosses to Ko Phi Phi Don, the main island, where you come ashore for a halal buffet lunch and time to rest on the beach. The whole day runs six hours from pickup to return, with the schedule flexible if weather or tides shift the stops around. A live guide speaks English, Thai or Mandarin depending on the group, so you hear the story of each site as you move through it.

The trip requires a minimum of ten participants to run, and pickup is available from specified areas in Krabi. If you're staying elsewhere, you meet the group at the pier. National park fees are not included in the price and are paid separately at the pier before departure. Travel insurance covers all guests, and snorkeling equipment (mask, fins and snorkel) is provided.
