The Experience

I didn’t expect the morning to start with so much laughter — our driver in Krabi was already joking before we’d even left the hotel. The ride to the pier was quick but I kept glancing out the window, half-awake, watching the sky get brighter. The first stop was Maya Bay — or actually, just off it since it’s closed for a bit. We floated nearby and honestly, the water almost glowed. I could smell sunscreen and salt and someone’s pineapple snack. Somchai told us about how they’re letting nature recover here; he seemed proud of that. Later at Pi Leh Bay, I jumped in for snorkeling and instantly forgot about everything else. It’s weird how quiet it gets underwater except for your own breath — bright fish everywhere, one brushed my arm and I nearly laughed through my mask.

Monkey Beach was next. Not gonna lie: I was nervous about the monkeys (I’ve seen too many videos). But they mostly ignored us — one little guy just sat there eating something orange while we tried not to stare too hard. There was this moment where a woman in our group tried to say “hello” in Thai (“sawasdee ka!”) and Somchai just grinned and gave her a thumbs-up. Lunch happened on Bamboo Island — rice, chicken curry, nothing fancy but after swimming it tasted perfect. The sand stuck to my feet for ages after.

By the time we got back on the boat for Viking Cave and Loh Samah Bay, everyone was sun-warmed and quiet. The cave looked mysterious from a distance (Somchai explained about birds’ nests inside), but honestly I was just happy to sit there feeling salty air on my skin. We got back to Krabi late afternoon — tired but kind of glowing too. Still thinking about that water color.
