The experience

You arrive in Kathmandu and spend the first day moving between the city's major sites: Pashupatinath temple on the Bagmati River, considered one of Lord Shiva's homes and Nepal's holiest pilgrimage site; Syambhunath, a 700-year-old Buddhist temple where sacred monkeys still live; Patan across the river, known for its ornate wood and stone carvings; and Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO-listed cluster of temples and palaces dating back to the 12th century. Your guide handles the route and the details. You move through each site at a pace that lets you absorb what you're seeing.

Day two is a six-hour drive west to Pokhara, Nepal's quietest city, where you settle into a lakeside rhythm. Phewa Lake sits at the center: the second-largest in the country, fed by streams and ringed by the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks. You can paddle a boat, visit the floating markets, or sit at a restaurant on the water. The next morning you head to Sarangkot, less than 10 kilometers away, for a sunrise over the snowcapped range and a view down to Phewa Lake. The same day includes Davids Falls, a waterfall that drops into a narrow canal, and Mahendra Cave, where stalactites and stalagmites fill the passages and bats hang from the ceiling.

Days four and five shift to Chitwan National Park, where the landscape and the pace change entirely.
