Kathmandu Heritage Tour: Durbar Square & Swayambhunath Highlights
You'll work alongside local artisans in their workshop, not just watch from outside.
A guided tour of Kathmandu's cultural landmarks—Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and your choice of additional sites—with an English or Spanish-speaking guide and AC vehicle pickup from your hotel. The tour includes a short workshop where you participate with local artisans, a tasting of regional cuisine, and a healing session; the full day runs 6 hours including a lunch break, or choose a morning option lasting 3 to 4 hours.
Step-by-step itinerary
Kathmandu heritage sightseeing tour
- Pick up from hotel or homestay
- Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square
- Visit Swayambhu or other selected sites
- Enjoy local cuisine tasting
- Participate in workshop with local artisans
- Experience healing session
- Transfer back to hotel or homestay
The Experience
The tour starts at 9:30 am with hotel pickup five minutes before departure. You'll visit two or three of Kathmandu's major heritage sites depending on which route you choose: Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath (the monkey temple) are paired with either Patan City for a full day, or you can combine Pashupati with Boudha Stupa, or pair Bhaktapur Durbar Square with Changunarayan Temple. An English or Spanish-speaking guide travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle, explaining the history and significance of each site as you move through the valley.
Between the main sites, you'll stop to taste local Nepali cuisine and spend time in a workshop with local artisans—potters, metalworkers or textile makers depending on the day's route. This is hands-on: you participate in the craft rather than observe it from a distance. The operator also arranges a healing session, typically involving traditional Ayurvedic or herbal practices. These interactions happen at a slower pace than pure sightseeing, so you're not rushing from one landmark to the next.
The full-day tour includes a one-hour lunch break and runs about 6 hours total; the morning option covers fewer sites in 3 to 4 hours. Either way, you're returned to your hotel or homestay afterward. If you're traveling alone, transfers switch to a motorbike or you can add a €25 surcharge to keep the AC vehicle; group pickups are confirmed the day before.

What's the difference between the morning and full-day Kathmandu Heritage Tour?
The morning tour lasts 3 to 4 hours and covers two sites—typically Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath. The full-day tour runs 6 hours including a one-hour lunch break and adds a third site, giving you more time at each location and more workshop or artisan interaction.
Do I get to actually make something in the workshop, or is it just a demonstration?
You participate in the workshop with local artisans rather than watch a demonstration. The exact craft—pottery, metalwork, textiles—varies by day and route, but you'll have hands-on time learning a basic technique.
What counts as the "local cuisine" tasting on this tour?
The tour includes a tasting of regional Nepali dishes, though the specific foods depend on which heritage route you choose and where the guide takes you. The full-day option includes a full lunch break, while the morning tour typically has a shorter food stop.
Will I be in a private group or joining other travelers?
You can book a private tour or join a group tour. If you join a group, the pickup time and meeting point are confirmed the day before your tour date.
Is the healing session part of every tour, or only certain routes?
The healing session is included as part of the heritage tour experience, though the specific type—Ayurvedic, herbal or other traditional practice—may vary depending on which route and artisan workshops are scheduled for your date.
What happens if I'm traveling alone—do I still get the AC vehicle?
Solo travelers can choose a motorbike transfer at no extra cost, or add a €25 surcharge to keep the air-conditioned vehicle for the full tour.
