The Experience

Swayambhunath opens the day—the biggest Buddhist temple in Kathmandu, known locally as the monkey temple because of the primates around its grounds. A short climb from the parking lot brings you to the prayer flags called Lungta, and the temple overlooks the entire Kathmandu valley. Your guide explains what you are standing in front of as you move through the site.

Kathmandu Durbar Square comes next, a palace complex in the city center built across the 16th and 17th centuries and now a UNESCO site. The square holds dozens of temples, including the tallest one—the Taleju temple, a tutelary deity of the royal family where animal sacrifice still takes place during Dashain, Nepal's biggest Hindu festival. The guide navigates the layout and the history without you having to piece it together alone.

Boudhanath, Nepal's largest stupa, lets you walk the Kora—a circuit around the temple where devotees spin the prayer wheels as they go. Monasteries open in the afternoon if you want to step inside without shoes. The stupa sits in a neighborhood where pilgrims and locals move through the same ritual space, and the guide positions you to see how it works.

Pashupatinath closes the tour on the banks of the Bagmati River. The main temple is closed to visitors, but the left bank gives a vantage point to watch Hindu death ceremonies performed on the right bank—a ritual most travelers come to Kathmandu to witness. Sadhus, the religious ascetics, gather here; photos with them require a separate payment to them directly.
