The Experience

“You see that monkey?” our driver-guide grinned as we pulled up to Swayambhunath. I’d barely finished my bottle of water when he pointed out a little guy darting between prayer flags, totally unfazed by the crowds. The air smelled like incense and something sweet — maybe fried dough from a street cart? We’d started at Boudhanath Stupa earlier, walking quietly around the base with locals spinning prayer wheels, and I remember thinking how the white dome seemed to glow even under gray clouds. There was this gentle hum from people chanting, not loud but kind of everywhere at once.

Driving between places in Kathmandu is its own adventure — horns, scooters weaving past, then suddenly you’re in front of Pashupatinath Temple. Our guide explained why people come here from all over Nepal (and India too) for blessings or cremations. He told us about Shiva and pointed out where families gather along the riverbank. It felt heavy but also peaceful; I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside. At Kathmandu Durbar Square, he showed us old palace courtyards and tiny shrines tucked behind wooden doors — honestly, I lost track of which king ruled when, but the carved windows and pigeons everywhere stuck with me.

I liked that it wasn’t rushed — five hours sounds quick for four UNESCO heritage sites in Kathmandu by car, but it never felt like we were just ticking boxes. Our guide answered every weird question (“Why are there so many pigeons?” “Is that statue really gold?”), laughed when I tried to pronounce ‘Basantapur’, and handed out more water without asking. By the end, my shoes were dusty and my head full of stories I hadn’t read in any guidebook. Sometimes you just need someone local to point out what matters.
