The Experience
The pickup happens at 4:20 am from your Kathmandu hotel, and the drive to Nagarkot takes you 36 km east into the hills. You arrive before sunrise to stand at the overlook tower while the light builds across the valley. On a clear morning, eight Himalayan ranges come into view—Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Mahalangur (Everest), and Numbur—along with panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and Shivapuri National Park. The tower itself is the highest point in the village, so there is nowhere higher to stand for that moment.
After sunrise, the tour moves to Bhaktapur, the old city built around Durbar Square. The guide takes you through the 55-Window Palace, a brick-and-wood structure from centuries past, and to the Golden Gate, Talaju Temple, and Shilu Mahadev Temple. You walk the living ancient streets where the architecture—pagoda and Shikhara-style temples, wood carvings, stone monoliths with the idols of ancient kings—tells the history without a museum wall between you and it. The square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the entrance fee is optional at checkout if you want to include it.
The itinerary also includes a stop at the pottery square in Bhaktapur, where you watch potters at work, and a visit to a Thanka painting school to see how traditional Nepali art is made. Nyatapola Temple, the tallest pagoda-style temple in Kathmandu, built in the 17th century, is another stop. The whole day runs five to six hours. You get a professional guide who speaks English or Hindi, all transportation as described, a bottle of water per person, and the chance to ask questions as you move through the sites. Tips for your guide and driver are optional.
