Walk through Himalayan foothills to a 5th-century temple, crossing a suspension bridge over the valley

The Experience
The day starts with a 20-minute drive from Kathmandu to Nagarkot, a viewpoint at 2,150 meters where the Himalayan peaks come into view on clear mornings—Everest, Ganesh Himal and the Langtang Range spread across the horizon. From there, the hike descends through thick pine and rhododendron forest for roughly three hours, passing through working villages where farmers tend terraced fields and local life unfolds as it has for generations. The trail is steady downhill, which means the hardest part comes early; a moderate level of fitness gets you through it.
About halfway down, you reach the 250-meter suspension bridge spanning the Sali Nadi gorge. The bridge is narrow and swaying—it's the kind of moment people photograph and talk about afterward. From there the path continues through forest canopy toward Changu Narayan, a UNESCO World Heritage temple built in the 4th century and rebuilt over centuries with stone carvings that are among Nepal's finest. The temple complex sits on a ridge overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, and the town around it has kept its old style, with narrow lanes and traditional buildings. Lunch happens at a local restaurant before the drive back to your hotel, so you're not hiking on an empty stomach or pushing through the afternoon tired.
Your guide speaks English and leads the walk at a pace that lets you take in the villages and the forest without rushing. The three booking options let you choose when: sunrise from Nagarkot (catching the peaks at first light), the suspension bridge and waterfall route, or a sunset departure that ends with views from the ridge. Changu temple entry is included in some options but not others, so check which one you pick. Transport picks you up from hotels inside the Kathmandu Valley; if your hotel is outside the valley, you'll need to reach the departure point by 10am. Vegetarian meals are available—just let the operator know when you book.

Is this one for you?Pick the sunrise option if you want the Himalayan peaks at their clearest, the suspension bridge route if the gorge crossing and waterfall are what drew you here, or the sunset departure if you prefer hiking in cooler afternoon light and ending with views from the ridge. All three follow the same trail and temple; the difference is timing and which moments matter most to you.

Can I see Mount Everest from Nagarkot on this walk?
Everest is visible from the Nagarkot viewpoint at the start of the hike, along with Ganesh Himal and the Langtang Range, on clear mornings. The view depends on weather and cloud cover, which can shift throughout the day.
What is the 250-meter suspension bridge like to cross?
The suspension bridge spans the Sali Nadi gorge and is narrow and swaying, which makes it memorable and a popular spot for photos. It's part of the standard route down toward Changu Narayan and is manageable for anyone with moderate fitness.
How long is the actual hiking part of this tour?
The hike itself takes about three hours, mostly downhill from Nagarkot through forests and villages toward Changu Narayan. The full day, including the drive, lunch break and temple time, runs six to seven hours.
Is lunch included, and what are the options?
Lunch at a local restaurant is included in the tour price. Vegetarian meals are available if you request them when you book; let the operator know your preference ahead of time.
What is Changu Narayan temple, and is entry included?
Changu Narayan is a UNESCO World Heritage temple built in the 4th century, known for intricate stone carvings and its position overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. Temple entry is included in some booking options but not all, so confirm which option you choose at checkout.
Do I need to be very fit to do this walk?
The operator asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The hike is mostly downhill, which is easier on the legs going down than climbing up, but it does run three hours and covers forest and village terrain. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
