The Experience

The day begins with an early pickup from your Kathmandu hotel while it is still dark. The drive climbs to Nagarkot, a ridge above the valley, and you reach the hilltop as light breaks across the Himalayas. On a clear morning you see eight mountain ranges—Everest, Langtang, Annapurna and others—rising above the clouds. The 360° panorama of the range is the main reason people come here, and the timing means you watch it happen rather than arrive after the light has already settled.

After the sunrise, you begin the hike down through the Nagarkot Panoramic Trail. The walk runs 3 to 4 hours through pine forest and past Tamang villages, descending gradually toward the valley floor. The route stays in the hills and keeps views of the mountains throughout; it is a walk through countryside, not a steep scramble, and the guide points out the landscape and the villages along the way. Lunch is included partway through or after the hike, depending on which option you book.

The hike ends at Changu Narayan Temple, set on a hillside in Bhaktapur district. The temple dates to the 5th century and is Nepal's oldest, built in pagoda style with carved wooden pillars and stone gates guarded by life-size animal pairs—lions, griffins, elephants and others. The temple sits on a ridge with views across the Kathmandu Valley and toward the snow-capped mountains. Entry to the temple grounds costs 400 Nepali rupees per person and is optional; many travelers walk the exterior and the surrounding village without paying the fee. The guide can arrange entry if you want to go inside.

What’s included

  • Early hotel or airport pickup and afternoon drop-off by private vehicle.
  • professional English-speaking guide for the hike.
• lunch (on the Private Trip with Lunch and Sunrise Trip & Hiking-Sharing options).

Is this one for you?Book the Private Trip with Lunch if you want the sunrise and the full hike without sharing the guide or vehicle with other travelers, and you want a meal included so you do not need to stop to eat. Choose a shared departure if you are comfortable hiking with other small groups and want to reduce the cost; the sunrise and the temple are the same either way.

Top questions

Can I see Everest from Nagarkot on this sunrise tour?

Everest is visible from Nagarkot on clear mornings, along with seven other major Himalayan ranges including Langtang and Annapurna. Cloud cover and weather affect visibility, so the view is not guaranteed every day, but the sunrise itself happens regardless of conditions.

How difficult is the hike from Nagarkot to Changu Narayan?

The hike is a 3–4 hour walk downhill through pine forest and past villages, suitable for all fitness levels. It is not a steep climb or technical trail; the main effort is the duration and the descent, which is gentler than climbing uphill.

What is Changu Narayan Temple and why is it important?

Changu Narayan is Nepal's oldest temple, built in the 5th century by the Licchavi Dynasty and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its carved wooden pillars, stone gates with animal sculptures, and views of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas.

Is lunch included in this tour?

Lunch is included in the Private Trip with Lunch and the Sunrise Trip & Hiking-Sharing options. The other two options do not include a meal, so you would need to bring food or purchase it separately.

Do I need to pay to enter Changu Narayan Temple?

Entry to the temple grounds costs 400 Nepali rupees per person and is optional. You can walk around the exterior and explore the surrounding village without paying, or pay to enter the temple itself if you wish.

What time does the tour start and when does it end?

Pickup from your hotel happens early in the morning, well before sunrise, so you arrive at Nagarkot in time to watch the dawn. The full tour runs 7 to 8 hours from pickup to drop-off, ending back at your hotel in the afternoon.
