Step-by-step itinerary

Nagarkot sunrise and hike experience

  • Travel to Nagarkot hill station
  • Watch the sunrise over Himalayas
  • Hike through forests and local villages
  • Optional visit to Changu Narayan Temple

The Experience

The day starts before dawn with hotel pickup inside Kathmandu Valley. You drive to Nagarkot, a hill station about 30 kilometers away, and reach the sunrise viewpoint while the sky is still dark. As the sun breaks the horizon, the Himalayan peaks light up—Mount Everest is visible on clear days. The viewpoint sits high enough that the mountains fill the entire view, and the light changes fast enough that you watch it happen rather than just see the result.

After sunrise, the hike begins. You walk down through forests and past traditional villages, moving at a pace that lets you notice the landscape instead of just covering ground. The guide points out the terrain and the settlements you pass through. The walk takes several hours and ends near Changu Narayan Temple, a 4th-century Hindu temple carved with intricate wood and stone work and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting the temple is optional—if you choose to go inside, you pay the entrance fee separately and explore on your own.

Breakfast comes packed and ready: bottled water, a muffin, a donut, banana, seasonal fruit and juice. You can eat at the sunrise viewpoint or during the hike, depending on how hungry you are and where the group is. The return to Kathmandu happens by midday, with the same private or group transport that brought you out. Total time from pickup to drop-off is 7 hours.

What’s included

  • English-speaking hiking guide (on the Private and Group Hiking options).
  • private or group air-conditioned transport from your Kathmandu hotel.
  • packed breakfast with water, muffin, donut, banana, seasonal fruit and juice.
  • hotel pickup and drop-off inside Kathmandu Valley.

Is this one for you?Choose the Private Sunrise & Hiking tour if you want your own vehicle and guide for the full day and prefer to move at your own pace. Pick the Group: Sunrise and Hiking if you're comfortable sharing transport and a guide with other travelers and want to keep the cost lower. The Sunrise tour only option works if you want the viewpoint and breakfast but would rather skip the hike—though you'll watch the sunrise without a guide in that version.

Top questions

Can I do just the sunrise without the hike down?

Yes. The Group Tour—Sunrise tour only option includes the viewpoint and breakfast but skips the hike; the guide is not included in that version, so you watch the sunrise on your own and return by transport. The other two options (Private Sunrise & Hiking tour and Group: Sunrise and Hiking) both include the full hike with an English-speaking guide.

What's the difference between the private tour and the group tour?

The Private Sunrise & Hiking tour is your own vehicle and guide for the day. The Group: Sunrise and Hiking option shares transport and a guide with other travelers. Both include the same breakfast, the same 7-hour duration, and hotel pickup and drop-off.

Is the Changu Narayan Temple visit included?

The hike ends near the temple, but visiting it is optional. If you want to go inside, you pay the entrance fee on the day and explore at your own pace; the guide does not accompany you inside.

What time does the tour start?

Pickup from your Kathmandu hotel happens early enough to reach Nagarkot before sunrise. The exact time depends on your hotel location and the season, as sunrise times shift throughout the year.

What's included in the packed breakfast?

Breakfast includes 500ml bottled water, a muffin, a donut, a banana, seasonal fruit and juice. You eat it at the viewpoint or during the hike.

Is this hike difficult?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The hike is a downhill walk through forests and villages over several hours—not a steep climb, but it does require steady walking and comfortable shoes. The operator does not recommend it for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health.
