The Experience

The day starts in darkness. Your guide picks you up from your Kathmandu hotel and drives to Nagarkot, arriving in time to watch the sun rise over the Himalayan range. On clear mornings, Mount Everest is visible from this vantage point. After the sunrise, you'll have warm tea or breakfast with panoramic mountain views before heading down toward Bhaktapur—a drive that gives you time to settle into the pace of the day.

Bhaktapur is one of the Kathmandu Valley's two ancient Durbar Squares and has survived as a living medieval city. You'll walk through the main square, see the intricately carved 55 Window Palace, visit the Dattatreya Temple, and move through courtyards and pottery squares where artisans still work. The guide points out the traditional Newari architecture—the carved wooden windows, the brick patterns, the way the buildings fit together. Some structures show damage from the 2015 earthquakes, which the guide will note as part of the city's ongoing story.

Because this is a private tour with a single vehicle and guide, the pace stays flexible. You're not moving on a fixed schedule with a group; if a particular temple or courtyard holds your attention, there's room to linger. The guide speaks English and can answer questions about what you're seeing as you go. Lunch isn't included, but you'll have time to eat locally in Bhaktapur, and the guide can recommend spots. The tour runs between five and seven hours depending on how much time you spend at each stop.

Top questions

Can I see Mount Everest from Nagarkot on the sunrise?

Mount Everest is visible from Nagarkot on clear days, but visibility depends on weather and atmospheric conditions. The guide recommends bringing binoculars to improve your chances of spotting it. Even without Everest, the sunrise over the Himalayan range from this hilltop is the main draw of the early start.

What's included in the price of this tour?

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Kathmandu city center, a private air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking guide, breakfast with mountain views, and bottled water. Entrance fees at Bhaktapur can be added at checkout; lunch is not included but you'll have time to eat locally.

How much walking is involved in Bhaktapur?

You'll spend most of your time in Bhaktapur walking through the Durbar Square, the temple complexes, and the surrounding streets and courtyards. The walking is steady but not strenuous, and you set the pace with your guide. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Is this tour suitable for families with young children?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels and infants can sit on an adult's lap during the vehicle portions. The early start and the amount of walking may be challenging for very young children, but families with older kids or toddlers who are comfortable in a carrier can manage it.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?

The tour runs in most weather conditions. Rain or cloud cover will affect visibility of the Himalayas and Mount Everest from Nagarkot, but you'll still see the sunrise and the landscape. The guide will proceed with the full itinerary unless conditions make travel unsafe.

How many people will be on this tour?

This is a private tour, so it's just you, your guide, and your driver. The maximum group size is 10 people if you're booking for a larger party, but the vehicle and guide are dedicated to your group alone.
