The experience

The day starts at 05:30 AM with hotel pickup for the flight. The plane departs from Tribhuvan International Airport and climbs toward the Langtang Lirung peak closest to Kathmandu, then continues east toward Mount Everest before reaching the Chamlang peak. On the return pass, you see the peaks again from a different angle. The flight lasts between 50 minutes and an hour, and you get a window seat as part of the booking. After landing, you return to your hotel for rest and breakfast before the ground tour begins.

The afternoon moves through Kathmandu's religious and architectural heart. Kathmandu Durbar Square holds 16th-century temples built during the Malla kings, with carved facades in the Newari style. The three-story Kumari Chowk at the square's southern edge houses the Kumari, a young girl worshiped as a living embodiment of the Hindu Goddess Durga. Swayambhunath sits on a hilltop and offers a 360-degree view of the valley. The site centers on a large stupa called the Mahachaitya and holds deep significance for Buddhist Newars and Tibetan Buddhists. Pashupatinath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, spreads across 246 hectares along the sacred Bagmati River and includes 518 mini-temples and a main pagoda. The current structure dates to 1692 CE, though records of the temple go back to 400 CE. Boudhanath Stupa, said to hold the remains of Kassapa Buddha, sits on the ancient trade route from Tibet and is surrounded by over 50 Buddhist monasteries built after Tibetan refugees settled in Nepal following 1959.

The private air-conditioned car and driver handle all transport between sites, and your guide speaks English throughout. The tour wraps with a return to your hotel. The entire day runs 7 to 8 hours from pickup to drop-off.

What makes Pashupatinath one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites?

Pashupatinath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located along the sacred Bagmati River. The temple complex spans 246 hectares and includes 518 mini-temples and a main pagoda. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and is described as a sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions built over centuries.

The stupa became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
