The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Your guide meets you there and leads the route through the valley's four major temple complexes and two durbar squares—five separate UNESCO sites that would take days to piece together on your own. Pashupatinath Temple stands on the banks of the Bagmati River and is one of the world's most sacred Hindu temples, built in the 5th century and dedicated to Lord Shiva. You observe the daily aarti ceremony—the offering of lamps to the deity—and see the sadhus, or holy men, who live in the ashrams nearby. Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, is surrounded by monasteries where you can watch prayer wheels spin and butter lamps light. Patan Durbar Square, in the nearby city of artisans, holds the Krishna Temple with its intricate carvings and the Patan Museum with ancient artifacts. Kathmandu Durbar Square in the city center brings together historic temples, palaces and courtyards, including the Kumari Ghar, where the living goddess Kumari resides.

The tour runs 10 to 15 hours depending on how long you spend at each site and traffic in the valley. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
