The experience

If you've just arrived in Kathmandu or have a single free day to understand the valley's history, a private tour solves the logistics problem: the car picks you up at your hotel, the guide handles the route and the timing, and you move through the sites without managing transport or deciding what to see next. The eight-hour itinerary covers the major heritage zones without rushing through them. Each stop has room to explore the architecture and the stories behind it.

The tour begins at Boudhanath Stupa, the largest mandala-shaped stupa in the valley, which sits on the ancient Tibet trade route and is now surrounded by over 50 Buddhist monasteries built by Tibetan refugees. From there you move to Pashupatinath Temple, a sprawling Hindu precinct of 518 mini-temples along the sacred Bagmati River and one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. Changunarayan, perched on a hilltop and dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is considered one of Nepal's oldest temples. Bhaktapur holds the biggest Durbar Square in Nepal and includes the five-story Nyatapola Temple, the tallest in the country, plus the Pottery Square where you can watch live pottery work. Patan Durbar Square showcases Newar architecture with its red-brick floor, 136 courtyards and 55 major temples arranged around the medieval royal palace. Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple, crowns a hilltop with a 360-degree view of the valley and holds central importance in both Buddhist and Hindu practice. The final stop is Kathmandu Durbar Square, where the nine-story Nautale Durbar palace stands alongside 16th-century temples, and where you have a chance to see the Kumari (a young girl worshiped as a living embodiment of the Hindu Goddess Durga) in her residence at Kumari Chowk.

Lunch is a Nepali Thali or Momo and spaghetti, served partway through the day. Your guide speaks English and travels with you the entire time, explaining the history and significance of each site. The car is air-conditioned and seats your group privately, so there's no waiting for other travelers or sharing the pace.
