The Experience
“You see that goddess lives right there,” our guide said, pointing up at a window in Kathmandu Durbar Square. I squinted at the carved woodwork—so much detail everywhere, it’s almost dizzying. The square was already buzzing with morning sounds: bells ringing, pigeons flapping, a kid chasing after his friend with a paper kite. I didn’t expect to feel so small wandering those old courtyards, but you do. Our guide—Prakash—told us stories about the Malla kings and the Kumari (the living goddess). Honestly, I still can’t wrap my head around it all.
After that we squeezed into the van (air-conditioned, thank god—it was already getting sticky) and headed out toward Pashupatinath. The air changed; incense mixed with river smells and smoke from the cremation ghats. Prakash asked us to keep quiet for a minute while we watched families gathering by the Bagmati River. It was heavy but not uncomfortable—just real life happening right in front of you. Someone handed me a banana from our lunch box and I realized how hungry I’d gotten without noticing.
Boudhanath felt different again—peaceful somehow, even with all the people circling the stupa and spinning prayer wheels. There was this low hum of monks chanting somewhere nearby. I tried to walk clockwise like everyone else but kept bumping into an old lady who just grinned at me every time (she was definitely faster than she looked). Later in Bhaktapur we wandered brick alleys past pottery shops and kids playing cricket in courtyards that looked unchanged for centuries. By Changu Narayan my legs were tired but I didn’t mind—the carvings there are so intricate you could stare for hours. We finished as the sun started dipping behind hills outside Kathmandu valley, everyone a bit dusty and quiet.
