The experience
This tour moves through Kathmandu's four most significant sites in a single day, starting with hotel pickup. Pashupatinath Temple sits on the holy Bagmati River in central Kathmandu and draws Hindu pilgrims from across India. The burning ghats there are central to Hindu practice and belief. From there the route heads east to Bouddhanath Stupa, one of Nepal's largest stupas and a UNESCO World Heritage site that serves as a pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists across the Himalayas. The guide navigates the crowds and explains the architecture and religious significance at each stop.
Swayambunath crowns a hilltop overlooking the valley and is one of Nepal's oldest and holiest Buddhist sites. The white dome and golden spire are visible from across Kathmandu, and the temple complex holds numerous structures decorated with Buddhist iconography. The site is known locally as the Monkey Temple because of the monkeys that live on the grounds. Patan Durbar Square, in the heart of the Patan city south of Kathmandu, is believed to be the oldest of the three cities in the valley and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The square sits at the center of Patan's traditional crafts heritage. The city is known for its fine Newari artists and artisans, and around 1,200 Buddhist monuments of different sizes are scattered throughout the area.
The tour runs seven to eight hours and includes an English-speaking art historian guide, air-conditioned transport, and bottled water. Children from age two are welcome. Entry permits to the temples are not included and are purchased separately.
