The experience
You arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and are met by a representative holding a personalized sign, then driven by private vehicle to your hotel with a floral garland greeting. This sets the tone for a tour built around not navigating on your own: the same private car and guide stay with you for the full five days.
Day two is a full-day sweep of the Kathmandu Valley's four main UNESCO sites. Kathmandu Durbar Square opens with the residence of Nepal's living Goddess (Kumari Ghar) and centuries of carved temples and courtyards. From there you move to Pashupatinath Temple, originally built in the 5th century and later expanded by the Malla kings. The grounds hold over 500 temples. Boudhanath Stupa follows: one of Nepal's most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites, recognizable by its dome-shaped structure and prayer flags. The day closes at Swayambhunath, known as the Monkey Temple because of the monkeys living there. You climb 365 steps past small shrines to reach the central stupa, where Nepal's largest Buddha statue stands.
Day three continues with Patan Durbar Square, the former royal palace with three distinct courtyards and the Krishna Mandir temple. You then visit Dakshinkali Temple, significant in Hindu practice, and the ancient village of Chobar at the valley's edge before driving up to Nagarkot at 2,160 meters. Day four begins before dawn, the point of staying overnight there, so you can watch the sun rise over Everest, Dorje Lhakpa, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar and Rolwaling. After the sunrise you descend back to Kathmandu with stops at Changu Narayan Temple (one of Nepal's oldest, with intricate carvings) and Bhaktapur Durbar Square, where Newari architecture and carved gates dominate the courtyards. Day five is your transfer back to the airport.
The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language and is with you throughout. Children from age 15 are welcome. Light hiking is part of the itinerary (the 365 steps at Swayambhunath and the walk around temple grounds), but the tour is suitable for all fitness levels.
