The experience
The morning centers on three snorkeling points in the waters off Nusa Penida. Manta Bay is named for the graceful rays that appear on almost every dive, along with spotted stingrays, nurse sharks and occasional sea turtles. The water runs cold from Indian Ocean currents but visibility often reaches 20 metres, letting you photograph the mantas feeding in the plankton-rich shallows. Crystal Bay offers schools of anthias and batfish in crystal-clear water, and between July and September you may see the mola mola. An oceanic sunfish that can reach 3 metres long and weigh over 2,000 kg, usually found in deep waters but occasionally drifting inshore. Gamat Bay is quieter and less crowded, with soft sand and colorful corals favored by local divers. Your English-speaking guide handles the logistics. Snorkelling equipment, towel and lunch are included.
After the boat returns to the mainland, an air-conditioned car takes you south through the limestone hills. There is usually a brief stop at a secluded cliff-backed beach, often Padang-Padang Beach, to rest and cool down before continuing to Uluwatu Temple. Perched on a steep cliff about 70 metres above the Indian Ocean, the temple is one of Bali's six key spiritual pillars and one of the island's top sunset spots. As the sun begins to set, you take your seat at the open-air amphitheater right next to the temple to watch the Kecak and Fire Dance: a performance of dozens of men chanting "Cak-cak-cak" against the golden twilight sky, telling the story of the Ramayana. The dance ticket is included.
The day ends on Jimbaran Beach with grilled seafood dinner under the stars. The meal includes fresh-caught snapper, squid, clams and prawns, grilled to order and served with Balinese soup, steamed rice, plecing kangkung (water spinach), four kinds of sauce, mineral water and mixed fruit for dessert. The restaurants here operate under a new local management system and sit directly on the sand facing the Indian Ocean, a 10-minute drive from the international airport.
