The Experience

The tour starts at 3 p.m. from your hotel in Seminyak, Ubud, Sanur, Canggu or one of several other neighborhoods across Bali. Your driver—English-speaking and trained as a guide—handles the route while you sit in an air-conditioned vehicle. On the way, you pass Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, a landmark most visitors recognize. The drive takes you south toward the coast.

Uluwatu Temple sits on top of a steep cliff approximately 70 meters above the waves, with direct views of the Indian Ocean. The temple is one of six key spiritual pillars in Bali, built in traditional Balinese architecture with carved gateways and ancient sculptures. You arrive as the light begins to shift, the backdrop turning golden. After time to walk the temple grounds and take in the view, you move to the performance space for the Kecak Dance—a one-hour show that tells part of the Ramayana story, the tale of Goddess Sita abducted by King Ravana. The dance originated in the village of Bona in the 1930s, when local artists adapted it from a sacred chant into a public performance art. Performers chant in rhythmic unison while dancers move through the story, and fire dancers add intensity to the finale.

After the performance ends, you head to Jimbaran Beach for dinner. The seafood restaurants there sit on the sand facing the bay, and if you chose the dinner option at checkout, a set menu of grilled seafood is waiting. This is the most popular time to eat here—the sun low over the water, the catch of the day still warm. The bay is about a 10-minute drive from the international airport, which means the restaurants operate under a newer local management system designed to keep the experience consistent. Once dinner is done, your driver takes you back to your hotel. The whole outing runs about six to seven hours from start to finish.
