The experience
The ride starts early. You're picked up from your hotel and driven to Kintamani, where you meet your cycling guide and enjoy coffee or tea overlooking Mount Batur and its lake before the downhill begins. The cycling itself is a comfortable descent, not a race, that winds through villages, rice paddies and past temples. You'll stop to watch craftspeople at work and chat with farmers and villagers going about their day. The route covers about two hours of riding, and all safety gear is provided.
After cycling, you head to Ubud for a set-menu lunch, then continue south toward the coast. On the way you pass Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park. The afternoon ends at Uluwatu Temple, a 70-meter clifftop structure perched above the Indian Ocean and one of Bali's six spiritual pillar temples. You'll have time to walk the grounds and take in the views before the Kecak and Fire Dance begins at sunset: a circular performance of chanting and movement that tells part of the Ramayana story and can only be staged in the temple. The evening closes with a seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran Beach, where grilled fish and locally caught seafood are cooked over coconut-husk fires.
Your guide speaks English and drives the air-conditioned vehicle throughout the day. The tour is private, so it's just you and your party, no other passengers. Cycling insurance, all entrance tickets and the dance performance are included. Vegetarian and non-seafood dinner options are available if you request them when booking.
