The experience

"Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the salt in your eyes," Wayan said as he handed me a life jacket at Tanjung Benoa. He grinned like he’d seen hundreds of nervous tourists before me, probably had. The morning was already sticky-warm, and I could smell sunscreen and engine oil mixing with the sea breeze. First up: banana boat. I laughed so hard I nearly swallowed half the ocean. Then jet skiing, my arms still remember that vibration, and parasailing, which was quieter than I expected up there, just wind and distant shouts from the beach below.

Lunch was simple but good: some kind of fried fish and sambal that made my lips tingle for ages. We sat in Nusa Dua under a fan that barely kept up with the heat. Afterward we drove to Padang Padang Beach. It’s one of those places where time slows down. There were local kids darting between sunbathers, selling bracelets (I bought two).
