The experience

You start in Ubud and head uphill toward Kintamani, a countryside village set on a plateau where the air cools as you climb. The route takes ten hours total, with stops built around what makes the drive worthwhile: the Barong dance performance early on, which tells the Balinese story of good fighting evil through masked movement and trance. Then the Ubud Art Market and galleries where Western painters once lived alongside Balinese artists, changing what the work became. Celuk Village comes next, known for silver work, where you can watch craftspeople or try a short jewelry-making class if you want hands-on time at the bench.

Tegalalang rice terraces give you free time to walk the green stepped paddies themselves, not just look from a distance. Then the drive reaches Kintamani, where you stand on the plateau and see Mount Batur, an active volcano, across a valley, with Lake Batur spread below it in black rock and blue water. The plateau sits cool and high. The view holds the volcano at a remove, framed by the geography itself. A coffee plantation stop breaks the afternoon before you descend to Tirta Empul Temple, built around a sacred spring over a thousand years ago, where stone pools fed by twelve fountains still draw visitors for the water's reputation. Goa Gajah Temple, the Elephant Cave, closes the day: an ancient carved cave with stone reliefs and a bathing pond, rediscovered in the 1920s.

Your driver speaks English and handles all the driving. The minibus is private to your group, so no strangers join the stops. Petrol is included. You pick your group size when you book (three, four, five or six people per vehicle), and the same driver stays with you the whole day.
