The temple sits just below Moti Dungri Fort, and from there you get a sense of how Jaipur spreads out in all directions.

Day two starts at 8am at the Hawa Mahal — the Palace of Winds, built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh — and it's smaller than photographs suggest, which somehow makes it more striking. The pink sandstone is the real thing, not a filter, and the five-story honeycomb of 953 tiny windows was designed so royal women could watch the street life below without being seen. After the photo stop, you head to Amber Fort, which used to be the capital of the Kachhwaha clan until the city moved down the hill in 1727. The fort is built in white marble and red sandstone, and the drive up takes about 20 minutes depending on traffic. Then there's a photo stop at Jal Mahal, the Lake Palace floating in the middle of Man Sagar Lake — another 1799 commission, and it looks almost unreal from the shore. Lunch happens after that, and then the afternoon is split between City Palace, where the ruling family still lives in part of the building while the rest functions as a museum, and Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century stone observatory that's oddly hypnotic if your guide knows how to explain the geometry. The day ends with a stop at a cottage industry workshop where you can watch silk carpets being hand-woven, which is less touristy than it sounds if you actually ask questions instead of just taking photos.
