Cairo city tour: Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum
Sixteen to twenty hours: the Pyramids, the Sphinx, mummification secrets and Cairo's old monuments
A full-day Cairo city tour covers the Giza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum's mummification exhibits, and the mosques of Muhammad Ali and Sultan Hassan, with a live guide in your choice of language, lunch, and air-conditioned vehicle included. The tour crosses the Egyptian desert to reach both the plateau monuments and the city's historic sites in a single day.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Cairo's historic monuments
- Learn about mummification at museum
- Visit the Pyramids of Giza
- See the Great Sphinx of Giza
The Experience
The tour starts at the Egyptian Museum, where your guide walks you through the mummification process the ancient Pharaohs underwent: the techniques, the tools, the beliefs that shaped how they prepared the dead for the afterlife. From there, the route heads out to the Giza Plateau to stand in front of the Pyramids themselves, where the guide points out the construction secrets and the hidden details most visitors miss. You'll have time to photograph the monuments and take in the scale of the building effort.
The Great Sphinx comes next: a limestone colossus carved from a single mass, with a human head and a lion's body, standing as the guardian of the plateau. Your guide explains the competing theories about its purpose, its role in ancient Egyptian religion, and what archaeologists still debate about its construction. The day also includes the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Mosque of Sultan Hassan in Cairo's old town, each one a different era of Islamic architecture and power.
Transport is air-conditioned throughout, and lunch is included. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of eight other languages. You choose at checkout. The full day runs 16 to 20 hours depending on the option you select: the standard Cairo city tour or the overnight version, which extends the experience into the evening and early morning hours.

What exactly is the mummification exhibit at the Egyptian Museum?
The Egyptian Museum's mummification section shows the process the ancient Pharaohs went through to prepare for the afterlife: the wrapping techniques, the canopic jars for organs, the amulets and charms placed inside the wrappings, and the actual mummified remains on display. Your guide explains the religious beliefs and the practical methods used across different dynasties.
How close do you actually get to the Pyramids of Giza?
You stand at the Giza Plateau itself, where the three main pyramids are visible and you can walk around the base and photograph them from different angles. The guide points out the construction methods and the hidden details carved into the stone, and you'll have time to explore the area before moving on to the Sphinx.
What's the difference between the overnight tour and the regular Cairo city tour?
The overnight Cairo city tour extends the experience into the evening and early morning, giving you more time at each site and the chance to see the monuments in different light. The standard Cairo city tour completes the same stops in a single daytime run. Both include the same attractions, guide, lunch and transport.
