The experience
The Egyptian Museum anchors the morning. You walk through galleries holding more than 100,000 pieces (Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom artifacts) with your guide explaining the symbols and history behind each masterpiece. You'll see the Akhenaton collection and the head of Nefertiti, and have time to photograph what catches your eye. The scale of what's inside makes the difference between a quick walk-through and actually understanding what you're looking at.
The Cairo Citadel comes next, built in the 12th century by the Muslim ruler Saluh-Aldin. The structure itself is striking, old but sturdy, and your guide walks you through the Islamic history of Egypt while you're standing inside it. The Mohamed Ali Mosque, also called the Alabaster Mosque, was built in the 19th century and sits within the Citadel walls. You get the medieval military architecture and the later Ottoman elegance in one stop.
Coptic Cairo is three churches in the old quarter: the Hanging Church built above a 1st century Roman tower, the Church of St. Sergius where tradition holds the holy family sheltered in a cave for three months, and the Church of St. Barbara. All three date to the 4th and 5th centuries. Your guide connects you to the Coptic Christian community and the long history of Christianity in Egypt, a layer most visitors miss on their own.
The day closes at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, opened in April 2020. The centerpiece is the royal mummies: pharaohs of the New Kingdom between 1550 and 1050 BC, the most powerful period of ancient Egypt. You see Ramses II and others, and your guide explains the mummification process and what the remains reveal about these rulers. Hotel pickup and drop-off bookend the day, and bottled water travels with you.
