The experience
Xunantunich, known as the "Maiden of the Rock," sits on a hilltop overlooking the Mopan River valley, and the day starts there with a guided tour of the ancient Maya city. Your guide walks you through the site and explains the history of the Mesoamerican people who built it. From there you move to the Nohoch Che'en Archaeological Reserve, where you tube through underground caves, the underworld the Maya called Xibalba, floating through passages carved by water over centuries.
The zipline is the centerpiece: you clip into a harness and launch across the canopy on a line stretching over 1,000 feet, crossing the river below. The setup is built into the rainforest itself, so you move through the treetops rather than above open ground. A professional guide manages the technical side and stays with the group throughout. Lunch and bottled water are provided during the day, and an air-conditioned minivan handles the transport between sites, so you're not hiking between them in the heat.
The full day runs 8 hours from pickup at your designated meeting point in Belize City. Weather can affect the schedule. If conditions turn poor, the operator offers either an alternative date or a different available tour. Dress is smart casual, and you'll want to bring a change of clothes for after the cave tubing. Children as young as 4 can join, though they must be accompanied by an adult. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health.
