The Experience

“Don’t drop your helmet,” Charlie grinned as he handed it to me—so of course I nearly did. The drive from the port out to Nohoch Che’en felt like watching Belize slowly wake up; windows down, warm air full of something green and sweet. I kept catching glimpses of locals waving at our van, or just sitting under trees with their shirts rolled up. We got our gear—life jackets, headlights that made everyone look a bit silly—and set off for the 25-minute hike. The path was muddy in spots, but mostly soft underfoot, with birds making this weird echoey racket overhead. I didn’t expect to sweat so much before even reaching the cave entrance.

Inside the cave, everything changed. It was cool and almost silent except for water dripping somewhere far ahead. Floating on the tube felt strange at first—like being weightless but not quite trusting it yet.
