The experience
Your guide picks you up at your hotel, cruise port, or water taxi terminal in Belize City and drives you through the city's historic neighborhoods (past colonial buildings, lighthouses, and the Belize sign), while explaining the country's history and diverse ethnic makeup. The drive to the cave site takes about an hour, passing through different ecosystems and a historical community affected by a major hurricane. The smaller group size means you get near one-on-one attention from your guide, who stays focused on keeping you comfortable and informed throughout the day.
Once at the caves, you trek through jungle to reach ancient passages where the walls shimmer with natural crystal formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. Your guide walks you through the sacred Crystal Cave, a revered Maya underworld where pottery and ceremonial artifacts sit undisturbed, and explains their significance. You then tube along winding rivers before reaching a sapphire-blue cenote where you swim and have the option to cliff dive into the water.
The tour requires a minimum height of 40 inches and moderate physical fitness. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and can adjust the pace to match the group. Entrance fees are included. The full outing takes five hours from pickup to return.
