Explore Actun Tunichil Muknal cave

  • Swim through crystal blue water
  • Enter cave with licensed guide
  • Explore geological formations
  • Discover ancient Mayan secrets

The experience

Actun Tunichil Muknal sits about an hour inland from Belize City, and the day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to the cave entrance. Your licensed guide meets you there and walks you through what to expect: the cave system is built around three domains in Mayan belief. The heavens above, the middle world of earth, and Xibalba, the dark underworld below. You'll move through all three as the tour progresses, starting with a short swim through the water passage that leads into the cave system itself.

Once inside, you wade and swim through underground rivers, ducking under low rock formations and working your way through a breakdown: a jumble of boulders that requires scrambling and problem-solving to pass. The main water passage opens into chambers lined with stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones that have formed over thousands of years. The guide points out the geological processes at work and explains how the Mayas understood this landscape as a gateway to the spirit world. The tour culminates in the main chamber, where you'll see ancient pottery and other artifacts left behind from Mayan ceremonies: objects that have remained untouched on the cave floor for centuries.

The full day is 10 hours from pickup to drop-off. Lunch and snacks are provided, along with a personal floating device, all caving equipment and hotel transport. You'll be wet for most of the day, so bring a complete change of clothes, close-toe hiking shoes, socks and mosquito repellent. Cameras are not permitted inside the cave. Children from age 5 can join, though they must be comfortable in water and able to navigate tight spaces with adult support.

Book this if you want a full immersion in the cave system and the Mayan history it holds, and if you have the physical stamina for climbing, swimming and navigating tight spaces over the course of a single day.
