The experience
The tour starts with a road transfer from Caye Caulker to the mainland, then moves into a guided hike through the forest. You'll cross streams on foot before reaching the cave entrance. This is not a passive walk. The licensed guide leads you through the approach, explaining the site's archaeological significance as you move deeper into the system. Inside, the route combines swimming through underground passages, climbing a ladder, stepping over uneven wet rock, and navigating confined spaces where the guide stays close to ensure safety and protect the ancient pottery and human remains.
About five hours are spent at the ATM site itself, moving through the cave chambers and learning how Maya used this space for ceremonial purposes. The guide interprets what you're seeing (the pottery left in place, the arrangement of remains), and enforces strict conservation rules: no touching, no cameras, no deviation from the marked path. The physical demands are real: you need to be comfortable swimming in dark water, climbing without handholds, and moving through passages where your shoulders might brush the walls. The return follows the same route out, and the full day wraps in approximately nine hours from departure.
This is a shared tour with other travelers, so group size varies. Lunch and water are included to fuel the physical work. Bring closed-toe shoes with grip, socks, quick-drying clothes, and a dry change of clothes for after. The cave is wet and cold, and you'll want to change before the ride back to Caye Caulker.
