The experience

The tour starts with a 25-minute hike through native Belize forest to reach the cave entrance, where your guide shares facts about the local flora and fauna along the way. Once inside, you spend at least 2.5 hours in the Upper Cavern, an elevated chamber that opens more than 300 yards and rises at least two stories high. This was the main ritual site for ancient Mayan ceremonies, and what you see there. Four skeletal remains in their original positions, countless ceramic vessels, stone tools and hieroglyphs dating to 700–900 A.D.: has remained largely undisturbed since the cave's discovery in 1989.

One of the most striking moments is standing in front of the Crystal Maiden, a skeleton resting in the chamber in pristine condition. The pottery and tools scattered throughout force you to reckon with how this space functioned centuries ago. After exploring the Upper Cavern, you swim in a natural pool inside the cave before heading back out. The tour wraps with a local picnic lunch before your return to your drop-off location.

The full experience runs between five and eight hours depending on your pace and the group's fitness level. You'll wear a helmet and headlamp the entire time underground. The operator provides both along with bottled water. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and brings you back, and all landing and facility fees are included in the price.
