The Experience

We’d barely caught our breath from the bumpy ride out of San Ignacio when our guide, Luis, handed out helmets and headlamps right at the edge of the jungle. The air was thick and green—almost sweet with that earthy smell you get after rain. I remember thinking I’d never hiked in such sticky heat before. Luis grinned when he saw me eyeing the river ahead. “You’ll cool off soon,” he said, and yeah—he wasn’t kidding. That first swim to get inside Actun Tunichil Muknal was colder than I expected but honestly kind of a relief.

Inside the cave it got quiet fast, except for our splashing and Luis’s voice echoing off stone. He pointed out pottery shards tucked into corners and told us how people used to come here centuries ago—sometimes for reasons I’m not sure I want to know too much about.
