The experience

Actun Tunichil Muknal, the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre, sits in the Cayo District near Roaring Creek and was first discovered in 1989. National Geographic rates it the #1 cave in Central America. The Mayas used it for ceremonial purposes during the Classic Period, and as drought deepened, the rituals moved farther into the cave, closer to what they believed was the dwelling of Chaak, the rain god. You wade through a perennial stream that flows the length of the cave, passing crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, and encounter the artifacts and remains the Mayas left behind: pottery, tools, and the skeletal remains of men, women and children positioned where they were placed for ritual purposes.

The tour starts with pickup from your San Ignacio hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. Once at the cave entrance, you receive a helmet, headlight and life vest (optional), then enter the hourglass-shaped opening where the stream begins. Your guide leads you deeper into the cave over 8 hours, explaining the history and significance of each section. The most notable stop is the Crystal Maiden, an intact female skeleton whose remains are covered in sparkling mineral deposits: a burial left as a sacrificial offering for agricultural fertility. You'll also see ancient pots, tools and other artifacts positioned throughout the interior chambers.

Lunch is included and typically eaten near the cave entrance before or after your underground exploration. The full day accounts for travel time from San Ignacio, the cave exploration itself, and the return journey. Because the cave involves wading through water, climbing over rocks and navigating tight passages, a moderate level of physical fitness is necessary. The water is cool but not cold, and the path is well-established. Your guide sets the pace and can adjust for the group's comfort.

What is the Crystal Maiden and why is she significant?

How deep into the cave do you actually go on this tour?

The cave itself is 5 kilometers long, and your guide takes you through the most significant sections, from the entrance where most ceremonies took place, deeper into the interior chambers where the most sacred rituals occurred and where the skeletal remains are positioned.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer for the stream inside the cave?

No. You wade through a perennial stream that flows throughout the cave, but it is not deep or fast-moving. The water is cool and the path is established. Your guide leads the group and adjusts the pace. Moderate physical fitness and comfort with water are what matter, not swimming ability.
