The experience
The day starts with transport from Hopkins to the ATM trailhead. From there, you hike through forest and cross streams before reaching the cave entrance. The licensed guide leads you through the approach, then into the underground route where you'll swim, walk on wet uneven rock, climb steps and a ladder, and move through confined passages. The guide provides archaeological interpretation as you pass ancient pottery and human remains in the ceremonial chambers. You follow strict conservation and safety instructions throughout. The guide's directions are not optional, and the cave environment demands close attention to footing and handholds.
This is a physically demanding experience. You need to be comfortable in water, able to cross rivers, and capable of climbing and navigating slippery conditions. The cave passages are tight in places, and the uneven terrain requires balance and strength. Children from age 5 are welcome, but the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. A minimum height of 40 inches is required. Bring closed-toe shoes with grip, socks, and quick-drying clothes. A dry change of clothes is useful for after.
Water, lunch, and the entrance fee are included. Cameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited inside the cave. The guide speaks English and will meet you at pickup in Hopkins.
