The experience
Caracol sits at 1,600 feet above sea level in the heart of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, one of the largest Mayan sites in Belize and one of the most intact. The sprawling ruins cover nearly 25,000 acres and hold carved monuments that show Caracol was a major power in Maya geopolitics, allied with Calakmul and engaged in wars with Tikal and other city-states. The site is ringed by Ceiba, Mahogany and Sapodilla trees. The early-morning drive occasionally brings tapirs, jaguars or ocelots crossing the road, and the trails and causeways connecting the plaza groups often yield sightings of Howler and Spider monkeys, Keel-billed Motmots and Coatimundi.
The route also passes through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, where Rio On Pools breaks the drive with granite ledges and fresh-water pools set against scenic river-banks: a place to swim and rest before continuing. Rio Frio Cave, one of Belize's top caving systems, sits at the reserve's entry point and runs about a quarter mile through natural fresh-water pools, waterfalls and stalactite formations. The cave mouth itself stands 65 feet tall and frames the landscape as you approach.
The tour runs 12 hours total, with the 2.5-hour drive to Caracol and back accounting for most of that time. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live guide who speaks English or Spanish, and the day includes lunch, bottled water and all site fees. Pickup is from your Hopkins accommodation.
