The experience

Caracol sits inside the Chiquibul reserve on the Guatemala border and was founded around 1200 years ago during the classic Mayan period, home to at least 150,000 people at its peak. The site holds three large plazas, two ball courts, an acropolis and scattered smaller structures. The visitor center displays photographs, diagrams and recovered artifacts. Your guide walks you through the layout and history as you move across the ruins, with the tour taking roughly 7 hours on-site.

On the return to San Ignacio, the route stops at Rio Frio Cave in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. The cave entrance rises more than 65 feet high and opens into a quarter-mile passage filled with giant stalactites, colored boulders, stone chandeliers, water pools and waterfalls. It was used as a sacred burial site by the ancient Maya. After the cave, you stop at Rio On Pools, a series of natural freshwater pools and waterfalls 15 miles off the Western Highway, surrounded by 300 square miles of Caribbean pine forest. This is where the picnic lunch happens, and the pools offer different depths and sizes, so swimming and cooling off work for different ages and comfort levels.

Hotel pickup is included, and the tour departs at 7:30am. You'll need hiking sandals or trainers, sunscreen, bug spray, a reusable water bottle and swimwear.
